Debunking Common Myths About Restored Steinways
Myth: Only Steinway pianos restored by Steinway are “Genuine.”
Truth: The Steinway Restoration Center in New York closed in 2021, and its work is now contracted to an independent rebuilder in the Midwest. No Steinway employees, factory workers, or engineers are involved at this location. True quality depends on the skill of the craftspeople and the materials used—not the location of the restoration.
Myth: Original soundboards are inferior to new ones.
Truth: While our rebuilding partner can replace soundboards, we prefer restoring original ones crafted from select old-growth wood sourced from mature forests no longer found today. Expert restoration repairs any cracks and restores the crown and tonal qualities, ensuring the soundboard performs exceptionally and continues to produce music as beautifully as when the piano was first crafted.
Myth: A Steinway isn’t genuine without 100% Steinway parts.
Truth: Steinway no longer manufactures all their action parts, making it impossible to have 100% Steinway-made components. During restoration, we use as many genuine Steinway parts as practical but often incorporate high-quality German-made parts that are more consistent and equally, if not more, reliable. This myth is like claiming that changing the tires on a Porsche to a different premium brand means it’s no longer a Porsche. What defines a Steinway is its craftsmanship, tonal excellence, and playability—all of which we preserve and enhance with meticulous care.
Myth: A full restoration of a Steinway starts at $50,000 and up.
Truth: While this may be true for Steinway’s own restorations, we offer fully rebuilt Steinways from Europe for less than Steinway charges for restoration alone—delivering unmatched value without compromising quality.
